Best Session Replay Tools: Compared on Price and Retention
The best session replay tools differ mainly on price, retention and what else they bundle. Microsoft Clarity is free and unlimited, FullStory’s free tier keeps 12 months, Hotjar offers a broad suite, Mouseflow and Lucky Orange sit in the low paid range, and BusinessMCP adds company identification at a higher entry price. Pick by your main constraint.
How we compare
We do not run these tools in a lab. The table draws on figures published on vendor and comparison pages, mostly BusinessMCP’s session replay tools comparison and its Hotjar and Clarity pages, which state that prices were verified in September 2026. BusinessMCP is itself a competitor in this list, so its pages are vendor-authored; we flag that where it matters and recommend verifying everything on each vendor’s own site.
| Tool | Entry price stated | Retention stated | Notes from the pages we read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | $0, no traffic limit | 30 days; favourites and heatmaps 9 months | First-party cookies; no identification or CRM |
| Hotjar (Contentsquare) | Free; Growth from $49/month annual | 1 month free; 2 months Growth; up to 24 months Pro | Surveys sold separately |
| Mouseflow | From $25/month | 1 to 12 months by tier | Details on its own site |
| Lucky Orange | From $32/month annual | 60-day storage | Details on its own site |
| FullStory | Free tier exists | 12 months on Free | Broader integrations and sampling controls |
| BusinessMCP | Replay from $79/month | 7 / 30 days / unlimited by plan | Cookieless; company identification; web only |
Key takeaway: the cheapest tool is not the cheapest outcome if it lacks the retention or context you need. Compare on total cost of the workflow.
Tool by tool
Microsoft Clarity
The default answer for budget-limited teams. Recordings, heatmaps, rage and dead-click detection and AI summaries at no cost. Limits: 30-day playback, cookies, Microsoft’s cloud terms and no company-level context. See Hotjar versus Clarity.
Hotjar (Contentsquare)
A mature product with a free tier of up to 200k sessions a month. Paid plans scale with sessions, and surveys and product analytics are priced separately. Our pricing breakdown shows how bills grow.
Mouseflow and Lucky Orange
Both cited as low-cost paid options. If you are comparing them directly, the vendor publishes a Mouseflow page and a Lucky Orange page with its perspective. Read each tool’s own site for features, since we have not verified them.
FullStory
Its free tier is cited at 12 months of retention, the longest free window in this list. The BusinessMCP page notes FullStory has broader integrations and finer sampling controls than BusinessMCP. We have not tested its limits.
BusinessMCP
A bundle: replay, heatmaps, cookieless analytics, company identification and CRM from $79/month on Growth, with Scale at $199 adding the friction-to-test workflow and Business at $499 keeping recordings for the account’s life. Honest limits per its own page: no free replay tier, shorter retention below Business, no surveys or NPS, DOM-only capture, no mobile SDK. Its Hotjar alternative page is the place to check current details.
How to choose
- Budget is fixed at zero. Clarity or a free tier.
- You need history. FullStory Free, or a paid tier with long retention. See data retention.
- You need surveys. Hotjar’s Voice of Customer or a separate survey tool; see survey alternatives.
- You sell to businesses. A tool with company identification. See identifying companies in session recordings.
- You are strict about privacy. Prefer cookieless, consent-aware or self-hosted options. See GDPR compliant session replay.
What to test before buying
- Install on two or three key pages for a week.
- Check the recorder’s effect on load time with your own performance tool.
- Confirm masking works by recording a test form.
- Check whether the tool can jump from a frustration signal to the recording.
- Ask what happens to data if you cancel.
What most comparisons skip
Comparisons rank features and ignore workflow. A tool that records everything but makes finding the interesting sessions slow will not get used. Look for sort by frustration score, filters by page and segment, and shareable links. For heatmaps specifically, see our heatmap tools guide.
Verdict
Start free, define the limit you hit, then buy the tool that removes that limit. Use vendor comparison pages as a map but check each product’s own documentation, and treat any single “best” ranking, including ours, as dependent on your constraint.
Mistakes teams make when picking a replay tool
Buying for the demo. Vendors show polished recordings of dramatic bugs. Your own data will be mostly uneventful sessions. Test the tool’s ability to find the interesting ones: filters, frustration scoring and segments matter more than the player.
Ignoring who will use it. If only one analyst logs in, seats and sharing do not matter. If designers, support and engineers all need access, seat limits and shareable links do. On BusinessMCP’s plans, for example, the page lists 3 seats on Growth and 10 on Business; compare that kind of detail across vendors.
Forgetting the volume ceiling. Plans are limited by visitors or sessions. The same page lists 3k visitors on Growth and 50k on Business. Estimate your monthly traffic first, then check which tier you land on and what overage costs.
Treating replay as the whole analytics stack. Recordings explain behaviour; they do not replace goals, funnels or attribution. See Hotjar alternatives with product analytics for what a combined tool adds.
Skipping the exit plan. Recordings rarely transfer. Ask how to export and what is deleted on cancellation. Our migration checklist lists what to save.
A one-week bake-off
Run two candidates in parallel on the same pages. On day seven, ask three questions: which tool found a real problem first, which made it easier to share the finding and which would you open again next month. If the answers disagree, choose the one that surfaced the more valuable problem, not the one with the longer feature list.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best session replay tool?
There is no single best. Clarity is best on price, FullStory’s free tier on retention, Hotjar on suite breadth, and bundles such as BusinessMCP on company context. It depends on your constraint.
What is the cheapest session replay tool?
Microsoft Clarity is free with no traffic limit, per BusinessMCP’s comparison. Paid entry points cited include Mouseflow from $25/month and Lucky Orange from $32/month.
How long are recordings kept?
It varies: 30 days on Clarity, 1 to 12 months on Mouseflow by tier, 60 days on Lucky Orange, 12 months on FullStory Free, and 7, 30 or unlimited days on BusinessMCP by plan.
Do session replay tools slow down a site?
They add script weight. Vendors such as BusinessMCP say their recorder loads after the page is interactive, but measure on your own site.
